A majlis at first light, empty and entirely ready. Cushions squared along the walls, the dallah waiting on its coals, finjans stacked in a brass ring, the door standing open because it stands open. Whoever comes today has already been welcomed; the room did it hours ago. The work is a portrait of readiness itself, the quietest of the house arts, kept the way this land keeps it: without being asked.
