The ghaf takes the worst ground on purpose and answers it with shade. Its roots reach water no one can see; its canopy has held councils, lessons, and every traveler who needed an hour of mercy. Here it stands alone at night, holding its shape against the open dark the way it holds it against everything else. The oldest subject in this collection has never moved, and has never once given ground.
